Which Countries Led the World in Record Wind Power Capacity Additions in 2025?

China, India, the United States, and Germany emerged as the primary drivers of the record-breaking expansion of wind energy capacity in 2025. According to the authors of the newly released report, while total global installations reached an all-time high, the vast majority of this growth was concentrated within these four major markets, with China alone contributing nearly three-quarters of all new capacity.

“Global wind capacity additions reached a record 167 GW in 2025. However, this growth remained concentrated in the top four markets: China, India, the United States and Germany.” The report further notes that “China’s wind capacity additions in 2025 were a 50% increase over deployment in 2024 and accounted for a remarkable 72% of global deployment.”

Essentially, even though the whole world is building more wind power than ever before, most of the actual construction is happening in just a few big countries. The “167 GW” figure represents the total amount of new electricity-generating potential the world added through wind, but China did most of the heavy lifting. By increasing its own building pace by half compared to the previous year, China was responsible for seven out of every ten new wind projects installed worldwide.

The report “Global Electricity Review 2026” was published by the energy think tank Ember on April 21, 2026. Prepared by a team of researchers led by Nicolas Fulghum, the study offers a comprehensive overview of how clean energy met all global electricity demand growth over the past year.
