How Far Have Battery Storage Costs Fallen in the Last Two Years?

Battery storage costs have plummeted dramatically over the past two years, making round-the-clock solar energy increasingly affordable for the first time. According to the authors of the newly released report, these rapid price drops have turned daytime solar power into a reliable source of electricity that can be used long after sunset.

The report states: “Following a sharp 40% fall in turnkey battery costs in 2024, 2025 saw another big fall of 31%.”

Essentially, this means that the price of the equipment needed to store solar energy for later use has crashed in a very short window of time. Because batteries are now much cheaper to build and install, it is finally cost-effective to save excess power generated during the sunniest hours of the day and use it to keep the lights on throughout the night.

The report “Battery storage is now cheap enough to unleash India’s full solar potential” was published by the energy think tank Ember on April 7, 2026. It was prepared by a team of analysts led by Kostantsa Rangelova and Duttatreya Das.
