Global wind capacity grew significantly in 2025, with 169 gigawatts of new power added to the world’s energy mix, marking a 35% increase compared to the previous year. This record-breaking expansion brought the total global wind installations to over 1,346 gigawatts, according to the authors of the newly released report.
The report states that “the world added 169’014 Megawatts (MW) of new wind capacity – a 35% increase over 2024 – bringing total global installations to 1’346’866 MW.” It further notes that “this surge represents the highest annual growth rate since 2020.”
In simpler terms, the wind energy industry had its best year for growth in five years. The amount of new wind capacity built in 2025 was more than a third larger than what was built the year before, showing that the transition to wind power is speeding up significantly. This massive jump means that wind turbines are now producing enough electricity to meet more than one-tenth of the entire world’s power needs.
The report “WWEA Annual Report 2025: Global Wind Power in 2025: Record Growth and Emerging Challenges” was published by the World Wind Energy Association in Bonn, Germany, in 2026. Prepared under the guidance of WWEA leadership, including President Dr. Irfan Mirza and Secretary General Stefan Gsänger, the document provides a comprehensive overview of global wind sector milestones and development hurdles.
