Does Türkiye lead its regional peers in renewable energy generation?

Türkiye is the primary leader in wind and solar power generation when compared to its neighbors in the Middle East, Central Asia, and the Caucasus, according to the authors of the newly released report. While the nation still lags behind European averages for overall green energy, it has successfully outperformed all other major electricity producers in its immediate geographic vicinity.

The report notes, “Among 16 countries in the Middle East, the Caucasus, and Central Asia with electricity generation above 25 TWh, no other country exceeds a 20% share of wind and solar. With 22%, Türkiye is clearly ahead of its regional peers.”

This means that while many surrounding countries still rely heavily on traditional fuels, Türkiye is the only large producer in the area that generates more than one-fifth of its electricity from wind turbines and solar panels. This milestone sets the country apart as a regional frontrunner and a possible blueprint for how neighboring nations can move toward cleaner energy systems.

The report “Türkiye Electricity Review 2026” was published by the international energy think tank Ember on April 8, 2026. It was authored by Ufuk Alparslan, the organization’s Regional Lead for Türkiye and the Caucasus, alongside a team of researchers.
