Top Wind Markets: Which Nations Lead the Global Transition?

China remains the overwhelming leader in the global wind energy transition, accounting for more than half of the world’s total capacity after a record-breaking year of expansion. According to the authors of the newly released report, India has also surged forward to become the second-largest market for new installations, while traditional leaders like the United States and Germany continue to play significant but slower-growing roles.

The report states, “The record-breaking expansion was overwhelmingly driven by China, which alone accounted for 77% of global additions by installing 130 Gigawatts (GW) in a single year.” It further notes that “India has improved its position and became the second largest country for new wind capacity, just ahead of the USA.”

In simple terms, China is building more wind power than the rest of the world combined, securing its spot as the primary engine for green energy growth. While many countries are slowly adding to their wind farms, India has recently overtaken the United States in the race to build new turbines, marking a shift where emerging economies are now leading the charge in new construction.

The report “WWEA Annual Report 2025: Global Wind Power in 2025: Record Growth and Emerging Challenges” was published by the World Wind Energy Association in Bonn, Germany, in 2026. Prepared under the guidance of WWEA leadership, including President Dr. Irfan Mirza and Secretary General Stefan Gsänger, the document provides a comprehensive overview of global wind sector milestones and development hurdles.
