The current global shortage of electricity transformers is a significant cause for concern as it threatens to stall power projects and derail electrification goals, according to the authors of the newly released report. This supply-demand gap has led to a sharp rise in costs and delivery wait times, particularly for the large-scale equipment needed for transmission.
The report states that “A lack of transformers, or a sharp rise in their cost, could stall electricity projects of all kinds” and cautions that “manufacturing capacity for transformers is expanding, but any fundamental rebalancing of supply and demand will take years.”
Transformers are vital pieces of equipment that change the voltage of electricity so it can be moved efficiently across the country or used safely in our homes. Because the world is rapidly moving toward electric vehicles and building more data centers, the demand for these units has grown faster than factories can keep up. This means that important projects, like connecting new renewable energy sources to the grid, are facing long delays and higher price tags.
The report “Energy Technology Perspectives 2026” was published by the International Energy Agency (IEA) in Paris, France. It was prepared by the IEA’s Energy Technology Policy Division under the direction of Chief Energy Technology Officer Timur Gül.
