How much global oil consumption are electric vehicles already displacing?

Electric vehicles are now significantly cutting into global oil demand, displacing 1.7 million barrels of oil every single day as of 2025. This rapid shift means the worldwide fleet of electric cars is already offsetting an amount of fuel roughly equal to 70% of all the oil exported by Iran, according to the authors of the newly released report.

“The global fleet of electric vehicles avoided oil consumption equivalent to 70% of Iran’s exports in 2025.” The report also states that “electric vehicles displaced 1.7 million barrels per day of oil worldwide in 2025 – up from 1.3 million barrels in 2024.”

These figures show that the amount of oil saved by drivers switching to electric power is growing quickly, jumping from 1.3 million to 1.7 million barrels daily in just one year. By replacing gasoline-powered engines with electric ones, the world is effectively reducing its dependence on fuel that must be imported, creating a significant cushion against potential energy shortages or price spikes.

The report “The energy security fall-out: from fossil fuel fragility to electric independence” was published by the energy think tank Ember on March 18, 2026. It was prepared by a team of authors led by Daan Walter, Sam Butler-Sloss, and Dave Jones.
