Can clean energy tech fully replace imported fossil fuels for economies?

Clean energy technologies like electric vehicles and wind power have the potential to replace the vast majority of imported fossil fuels used by modern economies. While these tools can already address over three-quarters of global energy needs, scaling them up across transport, heating, and power sectors could slash a country’s fuel import volume by 70 percent, according to the authors of the newly released report.

“Scaling electrotech – EVs, renewables and heat pumps – to replace imported fossil fuels in road transport, heating, and power, would enable importers to cut their fossil fuel imports by 70%.” “Proven technologies can electrify over three-quarters of the global economy.”

This means that most of the energy we currently buy from other countries, such as oil for cars or gas for heating, can be swapped for cleaner alternatives that we can produce at home. Instead of needing to buy fuel every single day, countries can invest in equipment like solar panels or electric cars that work for decades without needing constant imports from unstable areas. By making this switch, a nation can protect itself from sudden price spikes and gain much more control over its own energy supply.

The report “The energy security fall-out: from fossil fuel fragility to electric independence” was published by the energy think tank Ember on March 18, 2026. It was prepared by a team of authors led by Daan Walter, Sam Butler-Sloss, and Dave Jones.
