How much gas pipeline infrastructure is India currently building?

India is currently constructing more than 14,500 kilometers of gas pipelines as part of a massive national project to expand its energy network, according to the authors of the newly released report. This buildout represents the third-largest planned expansion of gas transmission infrastructure in the world, trailing only China and Russia.

According to the report, “India has the world’s third-largest planned buildout of gas transmission pipelines, after China and Russia, with 19,635 kilometers (km) in development” and “the 14,517 km of pipelines currently under construction will bring the country closer toward” the goal of increasing gas consumption.

To put these numbers in perspective, India is working on a vast network of underground pipes designed to move fuel from where it is imported or produced to the power plants and factories that need it. While nearly 20,000 kilometers are in various stages of planning, a significant portion—roughly 14,500 kilometers—is already being physically built to help the country reach its target of tripling gas use.

The briefing ‘Southern Asia’s gas plans may be overblown’ was released by Global Energy Monitor in March 2026. Prepared by authors Robert Rozansky and Julie Joly, the report analyzes how geopolitical shocks and falling renewable costs are undermining ambitious gas infrastructure projects across India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
