Which Nations Lead the Global Energy Storage Race?

China, the United States, and the European Union currently dominate the world’s energy storage market by having the highest number of installations, according to the authors of the newly released report. However, emerging players like Chile, Türkiye, and Australia are also becoming leaders by integrating storage directly into their upcoming wind and solar projects to support cleaner power grids.

The report notes that “China, the U.S., and the EU lead on global energy storage installations, while emerging markets, such as Chile, are planning notably high shares of energy storage colocated with wind and solar.” Furthermore, data shows that “China, Greece, and Australia are planning the most storage projects associated with wind and solar farms.”

In simple terms, the largest global powers have a head start in building the massive batteries needed to back up their power systems. At the same time, a new group of nations is pioneering a “two-for-one” approach by building storage units right next to their wind and solar farms. This strategy ensures that electricity is available even when the weather changes or the sun goes down, helping these countries move away from traditional fuels more efficiently.

The report “Energy Storage Signals Shift to Renewable Grids” was published in March 2026 by the Global Energy Monitor. Prepared by lead author Ye Huang, the briefing analyzes the rapid global expansion of battery storage systems and their essential role in integrating variable wind and solar power into modern electricity grids.
