To accelerate the rollout of renewable energy, Fiji must simplify its project approval processes and improve the way the national utility interacts with private power companies. These steps involve reducing bureaucratic red tape and making business agreements more predictable to attract necessary investment, according to the authors of the newly released report.
The study recommends that authorities “Streamline processes: Simplify permitting and approval procedures for renewable energy projects” and “Develop standardized PPAs with clear terms and conditions.”
In simple terms, these measures require the government to create uniform contracts for purchasing clean electricity, which prevents long and costly legal negotiations for every new project. By setting fixed timelines and making it easier for developers to get the necessary permits, the country can reduce the uncertainty that currently slows down the construction of solar and wind facilities.
The report ‘Fiji: Assessment of Legislative and Regulatory Frameworks for a Just and Inclusive Energy Transition’ was published by the International Renewable Energy Agency in Abu Dhabi in 2026. Prepared by a team led by the legal firm Siwatibau and Sloan in collaboration with the Fiji Department of Energy, it provides a comprehensive roadmap for reforming the Pacific nation’s electricity sector to meet ambitious climate goals.
